Sports massage focuses on treating chronic pain aiding recovery from recent injury, improving range of movement, flexibility and promoting all round wellness. Sports massage can enhance a person’s performance, endurance, and mental focus for any event. Recovery from an injury can be accelerated and scar tissue formation can be prevented.
Sports Therapy is an aspect of healthcare that is concerned with the prevention of injury and the rehabilitation of the patient back to optimum levels of functional, occupational and sports specific fitness, regardless of age and ability.
It utilises the principles of sport and exercise sciences incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and where applicable, work.
A Sports Therapist is a healthcare professional who has the knowledge, skills and ability to:
Stress relief massage will not only loosen these muscles, but provides time to ’switch off’ both mentally and physically. Stress Relief will restore energy levels, alleviate pain, reduce blood pressure, and promotes the relaxation and re-balance of the body’s natural state.
Sports Therapists will possess massage skills that are an integral part of their scope of practice
Sports Therapists are not Physiotherapists, but Sports Therapists will apply “physiotherapy” skills because physiotherapy is defined as “the treatment of disease, injury or deformity by physical methods including massage, heat treatment, electricity and exercise, rather than drugs or surgery”
A full history of your condition will be discussed and after an appropriate assessment of the area an individual treatment plan will be discussed, then implemented by providing the appropriate exercise, massage and/or stretching techniques. If I feel that an alternative action may be required, for example referral to a doctor I shall do so.
Sports Massage is a massage therapy which utilises deep tissue techniques, with the aim of reducing muscular tension, discomfort and pain. Although sports participants benefit from sports massage, this method of massage is not restricted to sports participants, as the deep tissue massage techniques can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as:
An increase in local blood circulation which helps to flush out chemical irritants and waste products which have stored up within the muscle. At the same time, fresh blood flow increases oxygen and nutrient content within the muscle. This in turn can help with muscle repair and leads to a reduction in muscle tension.
Compression techniques can also influence blood flow and nerve reflexes within the muscle, which when stimulated leads to a relaxation effect within the muscle itself.
When a muscle is tight it can irritate nerve receptors within the muscle. This in turn can lead to feelings of muscular pain and discomfort. Therefore, reducing muscular tension can lead to a reduction in nerve irritation and a reduction in muscular pain and discomfort.
Reducing muscular tension and increasing localised blood flow can lead to an increase of range of movement around the associated joint. This is good news for sports and fitness participants as increased range of movement is linked to increased sports performance and reduction in injury rates.
Benefits include:
A full history of your condition will be discussed and after an appropriate assessment of the area an individual treatment plan will be discussed, then implemented by providing massage. If I feel that an alternative action may be required, for example referral to a doctor I shall do so.
