Chiropractic at New Body Barn, Devizes
What is Chiropractic and how does it work?
Chiropractic is a Regulated Primary Healthcare Profession and a Chiropractor is a neuro-musculoskeletal specialist, who diagnoses and treats dysfunctions of the nerves, muscles and joints. They work by understanding and analysing how your central nervous system is communicating with your body. Chiropractors can use a range of techniques to reduce pain, improve function and increase mobility, including ice, heat, exercise, manipulation, acupuncture and soft-tissue massage. They will also work with patients to improve their lifestyle as well as their physical condition to keep their body working as well as it possibly can.
Signals in the spine
The central nervous system (brain, brainstem and spinal cord) sends signals up and down the spinal cord. The spine and surrounding musculature protect the spinal cord and if there is an injury anywhere in the body the brain will ‘lock up’ the muscles in the back to protect the spine in order to try and prevent further injury. The restriction in movement, caused by the locked muscles, alters the messages your brain is receiving. This in turn effects the way your brain controls that specific region of the body.
Such restrictions, in the short to medium term, will cause mobility issues, pain or discomfort and long term they can have a profound impact on your overall health. It is the role of the Chiropractor to find and alleviate the restrictions in order to provide a long-term solution to pain and discomfort. When a Chiropractor adjusts the spine, research shows that it changes the structure and function of the brain, improving the cortical drive to the muscles and reaction times.
